To get the ball rolling - can anyone guess what this
prototype is and what famous product it became?

  1. I believe it could be the prototype for an Apple / Mac computer system, now widely used and considered a design icon in pop - culture. The tape box at the back is a "Cassette BASIC" operating system.

  2. Thanks Rob for kicking off. Can anyone ad any more detail? What did the Apple 1 become as a mass produced product?

  3. Apple 1 is the first personal computer with a fully assembled motherboard and also Apple's first product.

In 1976, the famous PC was first introduced when PCS were sold as self-assembly kits. As Apple 1 started to be mass produced, the product became a revolution as individuals could own their own complete set of computer.

Also, in 1970s, there were mostly so-called "large computers" around and people had allocated access time to use PC. Apple 1 targeted the weaknesses of PCs of the time well and offered users what they want in personal computer.

Considering this, Apple 1 was an incredibly 'user-friendly' product at the time. I think that is why Apple 1 is often referred to as a historic relic.
